Tree-Planting Campaign for more Ground Water and Drinking Water

Hamburg | 15.11.2017

As Initiative Pro Klima partners, OIL! Tankstellen and Klindworth-Kronol Energie, engage in environmental protection beyond their daily business routine. Under the heading “Let’s plant drinking water”, the two companies and their parent company Marquard & Bahls recently participated in a tree-planting campaign in Klövensteen Forest. Thanks to their efforts this year and last year, the planting of some 10,000 deciduous trees was financed.

The planting campaign took place on November 11, 2017, and brought together employees from OIL! Tankstellen, Klindworth-Kronol and Marquard & Bahls and their families for a good cause. Supported by planting assistants, the participants reached for their spades to put young seedlings into the ground in Klövensteen forest, a 500-hectare recreational forest extending from the west of Hamburg to parts of Schleswig-Holstein. After 5,000 deciduous trees had already been financed in 2016, another 5,000 were added this autumn.

The planting campaign was initiated by Klimapatenschaft GmbH in cooperation with Trinkwasserwald e.V. and the Klövensteen district forestry in order to generate more ground water and drinking water. With this aim, an area in Klövensteen Forest that has a very high proportion of spruce trees to date is gradually being converted to a multi-layered and species-rich, mostly deciduous forest. Deciduous trees drop their leaves in winter, allowing more water to enter the forest soil. Due to their greater biodiversity, mixed forests are more resistant and contribute to the diversity of species.

Initiative Pro Klima was founded in 2008 by small and mid-size oil traders, service station operators and other companies in the energy industry. It focuses on three action areas: providing efficient products, offering information and consultation on environment-related energy topics, and advancing climate research and climate protection projects. As part of these projects, more than 152,000 trees have already been planted in Germany.
