100 new trees for North Rhine-Westphalia

Hamburg | 30.10.2019

As part of the Pro Klima Initiative, the Petronord Group's end-consumer companies are committed to environmental protection. Encouraged by Schmidt Energiehandel – and on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of SV Herbern – another 100 trees were planted last Sunday.

In keeping with the anniversary year of the Herbern sports club, the campaign took place under the motto "100 years, 100 trees". The new trees, mainly field and maple trees with an impressive size of up to 4 m, were planted on an area of the community of Ascheberg, directly at the sports field of SV Herbern.

Around 400 participants, including many members and friends of the sports club as well as employees of Schmidt Energiehandel, came together on Sunday morning to bring the trees into the ground on this sunny autumn day. After the welcome by the 1st mayor of Ascheberg, Dr. Bert Risthaus, all sports divisions of the club – from football to tennis, fitness, cycling to Zumba – as well as the mini kickers with parents and of course Schmidt Energiehandel planted several trees, for which they will also take over the future sponsorship. While the volunteer fire brigade Herbern supplied the new plants with water, the participants strengthened themselves with drinks and food and watched the soccer game of the first men's team, which won against the SV Eintracht Ahaus to crown the day.

Tim vor dem Gentschenfelde, Managing Director Schmidt Energiehandel: "The campaign fits well into our concept, after all we not only want to sell firewood, but also plant new trees sustainably". Schmidt Energiehandel has been supplying the region between Münster and Dortmund with fuels for around 60 years. In addition to heating oil, firewood and wood pellets, the company also sells diesel and AdBlue.

With the planting campaign, IPK and Schmidt Energiehandel are setting an example for local climate protection. Trees bind carbon dioxide, produce oxygen and improve soil properties. In addition, they provide an optimal habitat for various animal and plant species and enhance the landscape.

Initiative Pro Klima was founded in 2008 by small and mid-size oil traders, service station operators and other companies in the energy industry. It focuses on three action areas: providing efficient products, offering information and consultation on environment-related energy topics, and advancing climate research and climate protection projects. As part of these projects, more than 162,000 trees have already been planted in Germany.
