Trees for the climate – sustainable growth for Bönebüttel

Worth Knowing:

Forests are very important for climate protection and the ecosystem. They produce oxygen and bind carbon dioxide (CO2), improve the water storage function of the soil and protect against erosion. Forests also provide a habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species. Planting trees makes a valuable contribution to the climate and counteracts the extinction of species.

Convinced by afforestation and climate protection, the Petronord Group and Mabanaft founded the Initiative pro Klima in 2008, which, among other things, is committed to increasing forest cover in Germany. In November of the same year, the Initiative's first afforestation campaign took place in Schleswig-Holstein, one of Germany's least forested federal states. Together with the Schleswig-Holstein Landesforsten, over 40,000 native tree species were planted on a former agricultural area between two neighbouring forests in Bönebüttel.

A look back at 2008 shows: The trees have grown year after year and have closed the gap between the forests – creating a large contiguous mixed forest. A successful contribution to climate protection.

Convinced by this success, the Petronord Group is emphasising its commitment to climate protection and supports further projects such as the renaturation of moors with the Initiative Pro Klima.
